6 Benefits Of Childrens Yoga Washington DC Teachers Say Have Changed Their Students

by Michael Smith

A lot of today's kids have a hard time managing childhood. In addition to grades, they are dealing with things like peer pressure and excelling at extracurricular activities. Social media has created new challenges for kids too fragile to handle them. Stress and anxiety are often the result. Academics have found that the childrens yoga Washington DC youngsters participate in builds confidence and self-awareness.

The advantages to kids are an increase in their ability to concentrate and manage stress. They become more self-confident and start to feel more positive about themselves. They get to participate in a group activity that doesn't include competition. They can go home and teach their parents and other family members what they learned in school. Yoga can become a family activity that takes everybody away from their electronic devices for awhile.

Teachers benefit from the programs as well. Each year teachers are expected to produce more effective results with less and less resources. In most public schools recess activities and physical education classes have been eliminated. Stretching and meditation don't require a playground or equipment. Teachers can open dialogues with their students, using the exercises as examples, about the things that challenge them.

Some students, predominantly male, object to the idea of sitting still for an extended period of time. One of the ways teachers tackle this obstacle is to explain the ways this form of exercise strengthens the body by building muscles. This makes the whole body stronger. Mastering difficult poses is a good way to improve the digestive system. It builds stamina. All of these things are necessary for anyone interested in going out for sports like tennis, baseball, or football.

Yoga helps kids focus. It improves the attention spans of the most restless and inattentive students. Balancing builds strength, but it also quiets the mind and creates a sense of peace in those who are regular exercisers. Mastering difficult poses and movements gives children a chance to feel like they have some control when the circumstances in their lives may seem completely outside their control.

Deep breathing and slow movements are designed to create awareness. Children who are encouraged to participate in these exercises gain a sense of themselves and learn to appreciate that what they say and what they do are interconnected. They become stronger and more confident. Their posture improves. They begin to develop a sense of their inner strength.

Relaxing and unwinding is one of the most beneficial aspects of the exercises. Balancing and holding poses for a length of time is a type of meditation. Teachers notice that students are willing to rest without much adult supervision. In order to help kids learn how to focus during a meditation exercise, teachers may suggest they mentally focus on something they especially like, such as a favorite toy or color.

Kids face a lot of external forces that can overwhelm them. They are inundated with school obligations, electronic images, and saddled with parental expectations. If yoga increases their sense of self-worth and gives momentary peace of mind, it should be included in every school curriculum.
