Stop Looking For The Best Diet Plan

Searching for the best diet plan? Put simply the best diet plan is the one that works best for you. If you are needing to lose weight, a successful diet plan should combine healthy eating with a reduction of the foods that produce the extra fat. If you need to put on weight (yes, some people have to!) then it will probably be based around healthy but fattening ingredients, such as nuts, dairy products and olive oil. In a strange quirk of fate, these same foods can also be used in what may turn out to be the best diet plan for you.

Magazine articles and TV programs are making all of us more conscious of the consequences of unhealthy diets and not taking exercise. Excess pounds do not just look unattractive; they can have a serious impact on our health both in the short- and long-term. It is hardly surprising that companies which design weight loss programs, or which manufacture diet meals for sale in supermarkets, are making more money than ever before.

But how do we, as consumers, figure out which are the most effective weight loss programs? After all, we are not nutritionists or dieticians and can only rely on the opinion of "experts" to guide us in our choices. Unfortunately, not all of these so-called experts are offering unbiased advice. Many are selling their own products and ranges of diet meals, not all of which work when it comes to losing weight.

The Atkins Diet grabbed the headlines a few years ago and refuses to lie down. People report remarkable results with it and, despite its inventor dying of heart disease, has become a huge worldwide industry. It is a more extreme form of the "low-carbohydrate" diet, which basically cuts out the likes of rice, pasta and bread, replacing them with extra protein. I am against this type of fad diet, purely because they are not workable in the medium- or long-term and so are what I class as "fad diets". In my view, the best diet plan is one that involves a healthy balanced diet that can become part of a new lifestyle.

The most popularly sold weight-loss diets are those revolving around counting calories. The basic concept is simple: you need 1,500 to 2,500 calories a day to keep at your current weight - depending on whether you're a little old lady staying in bed all day or a guy working 14 hours a day on the farm. If you eat less than this you lose weight. If you eat more you gain weight. Simple except that you need to keep track of every calorie (not easy when a slice of cheese can be 50 calories or 500!) and you need to combine it with vigorous exercise.

When it comes to combining healthy eating with losing weight, the best diet plan for you will be one that is balanced. Remember that word: balanced. To get healthy and stay healthy you need to combine proteins with carbohydrates and keep it topped up with the natural minerals and vitamins you'll find in fresh food and vegetables - especially eaten raw. Provided you eat several portions of fresh fruit and vegetables a day and drink lots of water and do not binge eat on fast foods you should be fine. If you have to lower your cholesterol, consider trying an exclusively vegetarian diet for a few weeks )it won't kill you, provided you include nuts, lentils, beans and other proteins). Cut out as much "bad" saturated fat as you can, switch to cooking in olive oil and you'll feel fit and healthy in no time. That's the best diet plan you can have.
