Numerous Advantages Are Associated With Physical Therapy Massage

by Megan Landry

Many individuals fail to realize how much a person can gain from physical therapy massage. Its benefits far outweigh mere muscle relaxation after a hectic day on the job. The healing properties associated with this therapy are something in which almost anyone can find merit. Additionally, those who have been injured or who are suffering from certain illnesses often benefit immensely from such treatment.

In numerous cultures, this procedure has been used for thousands of years to help various individuals heal. Human touch is a welcome relief for most men and women, especially during times of emotional stress, sickness, panic, or physical pain. It helps to convey support and compassion to individuals in the aforementioned situations.

Healers throughout the centuries developed a vast array of therapeutic treatments, all of which rely on the use of touch. Most of these techniques are still utilized in today's modern world. Relaxing the body is only one benefit of such therapy. Other psychological and physiological advantages of this treatment have been discovered, as well.

When receiving such treatment, clients are encouraged to relax as the therapist massages the tension out of their muscles, and thus alleviates soreness and rigidity. When each muscle has become loosened, the person will experience a greater range of motion, which in turn will make virtually all his or her physical activities of daily living more comfortable and enjoyable.

Therapeutic measures of this type are also thought to improve certain individuals' posture. This is because tired, sore muscles cannot appropriately do their job. In other instances, such treatments are the only way a person can find relief from symptoms resulting from car accidents, injuries at work, or other unfortunate occurrences. It may take several months or only several weeks to experience relief, depending on how severe one's symptoms are and the patient's overall health.

Studies also indicate that youngsters who receive a massage from their parents on a daily basis have improved immune systems. The study specifically concluded that when such therapy was conducted, the child's white blood cell and neutrophil count increased substantially. This technique is also frequently used after one has had surgery, and results are almost always positive: numerous health scientists state that the process encourages the release of certain brain chemicals that help patients to recover faster from illnesses. Additionally, evidence suggests that it may boost certain individuals' immune systems.

When the services of a physical therapist are necessary, patients are typically referred to such a professional by their family doctor. However, no one should ever continue treatment with a practitioner with whom he or she feels uncomfortable. If the treatments do not appear to be helping, or one does not have a good rapport with the therapist, he or she should ask for a different referral.

Although still somewhat controversial, evidence suggests that physical therapy massage can help certain individuals to release bad emotions. The results of some studies indicate that negative emotion can be channeled into one's muscles, and that therapeutic massage can help the person to release such tension. Of course, this type of therapy or other alternative treatments should not be used in place of traditional mental or psychological treatments. Those who feel they may benefit from such therapy should speak to a qualified healthcare practitioner about pursuing such treatment.
