Health Club In Doylestown Offers Shotokan Karate Instruction

Martial arts provide both an effective form of exercise, and a means of self-defense. Karate is grouped into four main forms and has its roots in Japan; Shotokan karate is considered the original style and is known for being challenging. People who are interested in beginning the study of this art, can find a Doylestown PA health club that provides such instruction.

This traditional form of karate was first developed in the early part of the last century by Gichin and Gigo Funakoshi, a father and son from Okinawa. It is based on movements that are more linear and features deep stances, and uses less circular movement than some other types of karate. Its practice promotes strength in the legs, stability and power.

Training is divided into 3 main areas; basic principles, forms of moves, and sparring. Students are taught in a manner which places an emphasis on exhibiting power and strength. As they progress into sparring against real or imaginary opponents, one's style will be refined into a system of fluid movements centered on speed and efficiency.

The "kata" or basic moves include blocks, punches, sweeps, strikes, and kicks. First the student will learn to master these moves and use them in simulated matches against imagined opponents. Once they are ready, the instructor will pair up pupils in sparring matches against each other where they can put their skills into practice.

The color of one's belt is indicative of the level he or she has achieved in this school of karate. Darker colors signify a higher level with black being the highest; novices will wear a white belt and work towards the other color belts. The student must pass a belt test given by the instructor in order to be placed in the next level.

Students of karate learn patience, dedication, concentration and gain agility, balance, and flexibility. Its regular practice keeps the body fit and it is also valuable knowledge to possess in the event that it is needed for self-defense. Potential students can find out more at their local Doylestown PA health club that offers lessons.
