GPS data loggers, also called GPS loggers, happen to be special devices that log in their position and they do it on regular intervals. This data is then stored into the memory of the device and later it can be easily downloaded to your computer. Often GPS loggers are used in sports to help keep track of mileage and distance that a person covers. These loggers are quite small, which allows them to be easily taken in a pocket or even on an armband. You can find them online or GPS loggers can be found in many hardware stores as well.

Understanding GPS Not sure what GPS is? Well, GPS stands for Global Position System. This is a type of navigation system used on a global basis, known as GNSS. The Department of Defense in the US actually developed it. Today any one can use it and it is used for tracking and navigation.

A GPS device is able to track or pinpoint its exact position with the help of radiowave signals emitted by any of the medium earth orbit satellites. With this system, GPS devices are not only able to determine its location, but it can also determine its velocity and time.

GPS Loggers Various uses are available for GPS loggers. Often travel and sports are common uses, but other uses are available for GPS data loggers too. Just a few of the applications for these devices include security, geotagging, asset tracking, and sports.

Sports There are several sports related applications for GPS loggers. The devices are, however, mainly used for outdoor sports such as jogging, hiking, biking, etc. You can take the small gadget with you and later on download the data to your computer to determine where you've been or how fast you were going. This system is also used in the sport of gliding where competitors are made to fly close circuit routes. When they land, the data stored in the GPS loggers will help determine if they followed the path and who did it the fastest.

Geotagging Uses Another use for GPS loggers is geotagging. The data that you get on one of these devices can be used with data that you get from pictures taken digitally. This is called geotagging. If you go out hiking and you take the digital camera and your GPS data logger, then you can actually come up with the location where you took the image. Of course this does depend on whether or not the time and date on the camera was right.

In Security and Asset Tracking A GPS logger is often used for security and asset tracking. They can be used to keep track of pets so that the owner knows where the pet goes each day. Some parents even put these devices on their children or on their vehicles so they know where they go. Many times these devices are used for private investigations and other types of security that may require tracking an asset.

The Cost You can purchase these GPS loggers in many stores that carry gadgets. Of course you can make an order for this device on the Internet as well. Usually you'll pay anywhere from $25-200 for a good device. Of course some will cost more than other devices. The price you pay will depend on the data storage, how it is downloaded, and the amount of memory space that the gadget has.
