Review: Garmin Forerunner 310XT

by Ed J Price

One of the latest heart rate monitors to be released by Garmin is the Garmin 310XT heart monitor. They have over the years taken major strides to establish themselves as one of the best if not the best in heart rate monitor manufacturers in this competitive industry. In the beginning of the third quarter in 2009 alone, they are poised to release two new heart rate monitors. These will be the Garmin 310 and the FR60 heart rate monitor. There is a lot of hope riding on these two monitors. To come out tops, Garmin monitors have to provide more than just heart rate reading. It has to have more features such as GPS to catch the eyes of prospective users. Here is a non biased review on the 310.

GPS - Second to None

Having being the first, this Garmin monitor is a GPS system that is not afraid of getting wet. Most other heart rate monitors with a GPS system are not waterproof. This is a perfect tool for the triathlete in that it is able to track swimming, cycling and running data. The GPS system on the 310XT is second to none making it the ultimate training tool. Distance and pace along with heart rate are kept track of too. For the elite athlete or just someone looking to lose some weight, these are all the basics you will ever need. This heart rate monitor can also easily adapt to a bike after coming out from the water. It easily fits into any workout regimen and routine.

More Features

This Garmin Heart Rate Monitor has a very high sensitive GPS system that comes with fast reception to satellites even when around tall trees and buildings. This is possible through Garmin's Connect feature. Connection and communication with other heart monitors, a foot pod or the cadence sensor are done through the ANT+ technology which is wireless interface.

Downside

The 310 has hardly any problems associated with it. Top of the list for the Garmin 310XT heart rate monitor is that this heart monitor does not read heart rate data in the water even though it is waterproof. This is not a big problem. The second obvious downfall is size. This heart rate monitor is quite bulky. This is not a design flaw though because it allows for the 310 to sit on the handle bars of bikes.

Overall, the 310XT is a great all round heart monitor that is sure to get any heart pumping. If you are looking to hit those hills, run those miles or swim a little further, the Garmin 310 GPS heart monitor is the perfect tool for you.
